AFT President Randi Weingarten met with the incoming crop of new teachers to the North Bergen school district Monday, talking frankly about the challenges they face and offering the union’s resoures to help them succeed on Monday, August 28. Weingarten said the North Bergen Federation of Teachers (NBFT) is characterized by a commitment to professional development, advocacy and mutual support.
Weingarten recalled her time teaching social studies at Clara Barton High School in New York and waking up at 4:00 AM to channel her anxiety into refining the day’s lesson plan to ensure it captured students’ attention and interests.
North Bergen Federation President Liz Lynch, local officers and building reps talked with the new teachers, some of whom had been their pupils years earlier. Lynch encouraged the attendees to join the union and participate in activities along with their colleagues.
