Statement from AFT New Jersey President Donna M. Chiera and NJCU Education Professor Dr. Lois Weiner about Racist Campaign Fliers Distributed In Edison and Hoboken
Chiera said, “These racist and anti-immigrant materials are absolutely horrible, but not surprising in today¹s environment. Whoever anonymously distributed them is repeating what the President of the United States is saying every day. People who reject this divisiveness respond by saying that America is great because of the many people from around the world who have immigrated and help make it great. Diversity strengthens our country. It is divisiveness that weakens us.”
Weiner said, “We need to hear New Jersey teachers at all levels—from our K-12 schools to universities— speak out against bigotry, racism and anti-immigrant sentiment. Our professional responsibility is to support all students to feel safe and valued, and their communities respected.”
