Principal Wes Kanawyer attributes the small number of COVID-19 cases among students at Woodgate Intermediate School in Waco, Texas — around 40 have tested positive this academic year, with 85 percent of the student body in the building since January — to Woodgate using a mix of safety protocols from local, state and national agencies.

“If there is a hot spot, you hit that hot spot,” Kanawyer said in a recent Education Week story. “You don’t make blanket decisions that [affect] everybody.”
