In their new book, “Reading & Writing With English Learners: A Framework for K-5,” authors Valentina Gonzalez and Melinda Miller write about some of their favorite instructional strategies.

One is QSSSA (question, signal, stem, share, assess), which they say “ensures total participation.” 

“QSSSA supports English learners as they work with peers in a group, listen to each other’s responses, and give their own responses,” they explain in an interview with Education Week’s Larry Ferlazzo.
