Council Voice: More than 1,000 Protest for Higher Education

May 2012 Voice

Despite the fact that CWA recently settled their contract (subject to member ratification), we are not optimistic that the State and the presidents are willing to start to move to contract settlement and give us important contract language contained in the new CWA agreement. This is even more apparent because of the Rutgers settlement several months ago that contained salary language that the State and presidents proposed to us that we cannot agree  to. However, negotiations are continuing and may drag on into the summer months or beyond. Please continue to spread the bitter truth to your colleagues, especially those who think their administration is their friend. Talk to your local President. They are the ones who are behind most of these demands, and if they claim they are not, then they can urge the State to drop them. Continue pushing them to do what it will take to get a fair and decent contract for everyone.

Jan. Council Voice: Locals Ramp up Campus Protests over Stalled Contract Negotiations

The  Council’s  collective  bargaining  agreements  for  our   full‐time/part‑time  and  adjunct faculty  units expired on June 30, 2011, and since then both units have been working without a contract. Negotiations have been ongoing since May between the Council and the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations, but no significant progress has been  made. In and of itself, this is not unusual. However, the State has raised the ante to an unprecedented level by refusing to pay normal increments during successor agreement negotiation and by discontinuing the Sabbatical Leave and Career Development programs. The Council is challenging these actions at the Public Employment Relations Commission (PERC), but legal actions alone are not sufficient. The bargaining demands from the presidents of our institutions are so draconian that we cannot agree to them. Our locals have responded to this challenge by staging protests and taking other actions on their respective campuses.
