The American Federation of Teachers New Jersey (AFTNJ) is a federation of unions representing 30,000 education workers in prekindergarten to 12 school districts, private, religious and charter schools.

AFTNJ is the largest higher education union in the state, with locals representing full-time and part-time faculty, all levels of administrative, professional and supervisory staff, graduate workers and postdoctoral researchers at public four-year colleges and universities as well as state community colleges. As part of AFT’s affiliation in 2022 with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), AFTNJ is aligned with the AAUP’s private university chapters in N.J. that currently have collective bargaining.

From the state’s largest school district to small privates, AFTNJ stands up for New Jersey’s students. Our members teach early childhood education to prepare kids for school, special education and every topic from music to math.
